Service Overview

Carpentry & Joinery —
The Brief, In Plain English.

What It Is

Full-spectrum domestic carpentry and joinery — first-fix structural carpentry (floor joists, partition framing, roof carcassing), second-fix joinery (doors, architraves, skirting, ironmongery), bespoke staircases (straight, winder, open-tread, glass-balustrade), fitted bedroom furniture, alcove shelving, fitted home offices, and one-off joinery projects from cut-list to install.

Who It's For

Homeowners across the Northwest who want carpentry work that looks like a craftsman did it — not a fitter ticking boxes. Particularly suitable for period properties (Victorian, Edwardian, 1930s) where matching existing detail demands scribe-and-fit skill rather than off-the-shelf cover trim.

When You Need It

Engage us at design stage on bespoke pieces — the longer the lead time, the better the result. For second-fix on existing rooms we can usually start inside 2–3 weeks of survey. Emergency structural carpentry (joist failure, lintel deflection) prioritised same-week.

Why It Matters

Carpentry is the trade that everything else lands on. Skirting that's been coped properly, doors that have been swung level, architrave that's been mitred tight — these are the details that separate a 'fitted' house from a finished one. They're also the details a buyer's surveyor notices first.

What Happens If You Wait

The Cost Of
Doing Nothing.

Most carpentry problems we get asked to fix are downstream of fitters working too fast on day rate. Doors that drop, skirting with visible gaps at every join, staircases that creak from week one. None of these are difficult problems for a qualified joiner — they're just consequences of someone who isn't one.

Risks Of Ignoring It

  • Doors hung from butt hinges into unrebated frames — drop within 6 months, never close cleanly.
  • Skirting butt-jointed at internal corners instead of scribed — visible gap opens as the timber moves seasonally.
  • Staircases built off-site to a 'standard' template and trimmed on site — squeaky treads, loose handrails inside a year.
  • Architrave mitred at the wrong angle for an out-of-plumb wall — gaps you can't fill cleanly.
  • Fitted wardrobes installed straight off a flat floor — first house movement and the doors won't shut.

Common Mistakes Customers Make

  • ×Treating joinery as a finish trade to be rushed — it sets the visual standard for the entire room.
  • ×Buying internal doors from a shed and asking a fitter to hang them — the doors are the cheapest part of the job.
  • ×Choosing MDF skirting for period properties — wrong profile, wrong material, wrong look. Hardwood every time.
  • ×Skipping the structural calc on a new staircase opening — collapsed trimmer, ceiling down, very expensive.
  • ×Letting a kitchen fitter handle 'a bit of joinery on the side' — different trades, different standards.

Why It's Worth It

What You
Actually Get.

Qualified Joiner On Every Cut

Ryan does the work himself. Not a fitter, not a 'carpenter' off the apps — a time-served joiner with qualified City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 joiner.

Scribed, Not Butted

Internal corners on skirting and architrave scribed by hand. Tight joints that stay tight as the timber moves.

Hardwood, MDF Or Painted

Oak, ash, walnut, sapele, tulipwood, MDF, primed-and-painted softwood — we work in whatever the room demands and the budget allows.

Doors Hung Level And Square

Hinges rebated, frames packed plumb, doors that close on the latch with one hand. Every time.

Bespoke Or Standard

One-off staircase to a tricky stairwell, full bedroom of fitted wardrobes, or just a tidy second-fix to a refurbed room — same standard either way.

Site Tidy, Daily

Dust extraction on every power tool. Off-cuts and shavings cleared at the end of every working day. Your house is not our workshop.

Full Service Area Map

Bespoke Staircases

Straight-flight, winder, open-tread, full-spiral, or open-string with glass or steel-cable balustrade. We design to the opening, calculate rise-and-going to Part K (220mm max rise, 2m headroom), and build to BS 5395. Stringers in oak, ash, or paint-grade tulipwood; treads to match or contrast; handrails turned, machined or bent-to-radius. Site-installed and finish-sanded in place for invisible joints.

Internal Doors & Frames

Solid oak, engineered oak, paint-grade hardwood, fire-rated FD30 — we supply and hang to any spec. Frames rebated, hinges templated, latches and locks cleanly morticed. We also restore and rehang original Victorian and Edwardian doors — strip, sand, re-glaze, re-hang on heritage butts. Period properties get period detail; modern properties get clean modern lines.

Skirting, Architrave & Picture Rails

Profile-matched to the property era — Torus and Ogee for Victorian/Edwardian, Lambs Tongue for 1930s, Pencil-Round or Square-Edge for modern. Hardwood (oak, ash) or MDF moisture-resistant for paint-finish rooms. All internal corners scribed by hand; external mitres cut on a sliding compound for tight, gap-free joints. Picture rails, dado rails and panelling to match where requested.

Fitted Wardrobes & Built-In Furniture

Floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobes, alcove shelving, window-seat units, fitted home offices, under-stair storage. Carcasses built on site from 18mm MR-MDF or birch ply, scribed to wall and ceiling for a built-in look. Painted finish or hardwood-veneered faces to your spec. Hettich or Blum soft-close hinges, push-to-open drawer runners, integrated LED strip where requested.

First-Fix Structural Carpentry

Floor joist replacement and sistering, partition framing in C16/C24 graded softwood, roof carcassing including trimmers around new openings (rooflights, dormers, stair openings), lintel installation, noggings, fire-stopping. All work to current Building Regs and signed off as part of building control where notifiable.

Questions

Straight
Answers.

Cost, timeline, guarantees, availability — the questions everyone asks, answered before you call.

Ask Yours

How much does bespoke carpentry cost?

+

Highly variable — depends on materials, scope and finish. A pair of fitted alcove cabinets typically £1,800–£3,500; a bespoke staircase £4,500–£9,000; a full room of fitted wardrobes £3,500–£7,500. We quote in writing per project, itemised.

How long does carpentry work take?

+

Most second-fix carpentry runs 3–10 working days depending on scope. Bespoke pieces (staircases, fitted wardrobes) typically 2–4 weeks including shop-build and site install. Programmed start and finish dates written into every quote.

Will you work to my designer's drawings?

+

Yes — we work to architect, interior designer or kitchen designer drawings. We'll also flag anything that won't build cleanly before we cut a single piece — far cheaper to catch it on paper than in offcuts.

Do you make and fit, or just fit?

+

Both. We make bespoke pieces in our workshop (staircases, wardrobes, one-off furniture) and fit them on site. We also fit supplied joinery — internal doors, kitchen cabinetry, ready-made staircases — to a higher standard than the original supplier typically achieves.

Can you match my existing period skirting and architrave?

+

Yes. We profile-match to existing detail in Victorian, Edwardian and 1930s properties — either machined from solid hardwood or MDF moisture-resistant for paint finish. Sample matched on site before run.

What hardware and ironmongery do you use?

+

Hettich and Blum for hinges and drawer runners. Heritage Brass, Croft or Carlisle Brass for door furniture in period properties; Hafele, Allgood or specifier's choice for modern. We'll supply or fit owner-supplied ironmongery either way.

Do you guarantee your work?

+

Ryan will return to fix any workmanship issue within 5 years. Material warranties run separately per product. RG Loft Conversions & Extensions Ltd carries full public liability insurance — Company No. 11786422.

Which areas do you work in?

+

Liverpool, Ormskirk, Southport, Formby, Skelmersdale and surrounding Northwest England on a sensible travel radius from our Huyton base.
